Day Six of Spring Break:
Rainy day at The Acres. As you know, I
enjoy rainy days. A gentle rain is marvelous to walk and work in. And
it's "something new every day" time on each of my walks. (I even
"stumble" onto new blooms in the midst of my labors which today included
some planting.) Today the red corydalis have begun to bloom. Dainty
fern-like leaves and small red "trumpets" for flowers. Tomorrow will be
"feed the iris" day. That will take awhile--rain or shine. I've
never tried this before, but the garden in Oregon where I get my iris
nowadays--and they are always fantastic rhizomes--has a "food" they
use--so, I thought I would give it a try. Iris are my thing, you know.
The race is on for first daffodil blooms as well. Will it be the
dwarfs under the Ancient Maple or the dils behind the house--both are
budding and eager to win? The biggest surprise so far this spring has
been some pansies that I planted last fall to add a little pizazz to
late autumn. They actually survived the winter--snow blanket, I
guess--and are blooming. Hats off--Cardinal hats, of course, to my
fellow pansies. Purple and yellow smiley faces. The highlight of the
day came this evening as I sat in the green chair by the doorwindow.
There has to be three dozen peepers climbing all over the glass--singing
in dissonant harmony naturally. Another good day at The Acres. And
April showers bring . . .
