Backroads of Morrow County Update: Be Still . . . May 10, 2015

My soul was a tad restless today so I took the remedy I know will work best--a long, slow, meandering trek along the back roads of Morrow County. I took the gravel ones for most of the trip. They are much smoother to ride on than the "paved" ones out here. Most of the fields have been plowed by now, Their peaceful orderliness is a tonic for the soul. One place in particular just past the Highway Patrol headquarters is rolling, serene even in brown. Across from the plowed acres is a woods with a stream that traverses it. Then there's one of my favorite farm houses and a huge red barn. I am always tempted to stop the car and first, walk those hills--just to stand on the top and feel the country breeze would be magnificent. Second, I would love to walk those woods, meander along the stream--or in it. I wonder how long it has been since a human walked in that "wilderness." What would I find? What beauty unseen for who knows how long is radiating its God-given loveliness in those woods. How much unseen beauty is there in this world of ours? Beauty for the eyes of God alone. One field was white with a thousand dandelions just waiting for a breeze, A deer was standing in a meadow almost right next to a "No Trespassing" sign. He can't read I guess--or else he's a rebel. Or maybe he's hoping a hunter will come by so he can give him a deer smirk. No Trespassing venison lover. Hah.
The crab apples and lilacs decorate the roads this time of year. Some of those lilacs should be designated trees. All of them are lovely, fragrant. Some brown cows dotted one pasture. My passing was totally irrelevant to their life. Free range chickens ranging everywhere. The lambs are growing up, but they still have a ways to go to catch up to mom. The blueberry farm looks trimmed and ready for this year's harvest. Piles of logs everywhere under the electric lines. Guess the company was cutting back. The little white Methodist church and cemetery was still, quiet. No one challenged me at the one lane bridges. I was alone with my thoughts embracing the stillness that refreshes my spirit.

"Be still and know . . ."
