Backroads of Morrow County Update:
Strange spring. Started
out warm and wet. Threw in a couple of chillers--even one on May 15th.
No rain out here for a couple of weeks. Yet, all is green. Some
fields have not yet been planted, but most have. Perhaps, some will not
be planted this year and remain fallow. The winter wheat is still
green--no hint of golden yet. In some fields the crop is coming
up--corn and soybeans. You can tell almost immediately which it is. I
love the symmetry--green lines fading off into the horizon. One month until knee high corn!
Several farmers have already mowed and hay stacks punctuate their
fields. The field on the corner--do they have corners in the
country?--has been claimed by the annual arrival of the meadowlark. I
love his outfit and his song. Hummingbirds are about as well.
Red-winged blackbirds, doves, and sparrow hawks share the power lines.
The first just to fuss; the second to take in the scenery; the third
looking for lunch. Not much is flowering along the roads--well, lots of
wild blackberries. One pink dogwood along the edge of some trees. The
"common" day lilies are starting to bud, so waves of orange are in the
near future. I shall have to find some new roads to explore. Plenty of
options exist. Is it a sign of losing touch with reality when you
enjoy going nowhere in particular on old country roads? If so, I need
you not reality. For real.
