Mystery Solved January 28, 2019

The mystery is solved: Last spring the hornets--or whatever it is that builds those round gray nests--decided that my eaves on the back of the cave needed a new resident evil. That thing kept getting bigger and bigger all year. And they were "edgy" little critters. Two or three times a day they would gather a crowd and just attack my upstairs window. For minutes at a time. I could hear them downstairs in the library/front room/bedroom. I figured I would wait until winter when they would be inactive and then try to take the nest out. But when it started getting cold, the wind seemed to be unraveling the thing. And then big round holes appeared in the sides. What in the world was causing that? I hadn't the faintest idea. Then, yesterday afternoon as I walked upstairs, I heard some noise near the nest. Behold! Mystery solved. A wren was making huge holes in the nest, reaching inside and devouring the larva. Fresh meat for the winter cold I reckon. So I guess I will leave what's left of it up--happy dining my little feathered friend.
